Socket 1151 CPUs are a featured part in our quiet Skylake computer systems.
Intel® Socket 1151 6th Generation CPUs (also known as Skylake CPUs) are Intel's newest generation in consumer oriented CPUs. Socket 1151 CPUs are based on 14nm technology (compared to the 22nm technology of Haswell Socket 1150 CPUs). 6th generation Skylake CPUs continue to improve functionality and speed compared to previous generations of CPUs (Haswell and Broadwell Socket 1150 CPUs).
Improvements made to Socket 1151 (over Socket 1150 Haswell and Broadwell) are centered around improvements in graphics support. Intel has nearly doubled graphics performance in the latest line of CPUs, has expanded 4K support, and has expanded support for DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.4, and Open CL 2.0.
Z170 series motherboards exclusively support Socket 1151 (Skylake) CPUs and offer several improvements over previous consumer-oriented (Z97 and H97) motherboards. Z170 series (Socket 1151) motherboards feature:
- Expanded RAM capabilities - up to 64GB DDR4 RAM (previous versions supported up to 32GB DDR3)
- Expanded USB 3.1 support - most boards include USB 3.1 - USB 3.1 transfers data at up to 10 Gbps
- Widely include M.2 connectors - for fast and compact M.2 drives
- Increased U.2 support - Asus Z170 motherboards are hyper kit compatible for lightning fast NVMe drive support
